Christmas morning wouldn't be the same without a bulging stocking packed with goodies. Here, we show you how to make one yourself – it's really easy to do and you can even get the kids to help for some pre-Christmas fun.

Step 1 – Buy your bits
Buy some red felt from a fabric shop – enough to cut out a 72 x 58cm piece for your stocking. You'll also need some white furry fabric for the trim, measuring 45 x 8cm, plus white chalk, a needle and some red thread.

Step 2 – Fold the felt
Lay out the red felt on a large table, fluffiest side up, and cut out your 72 x 58cm piece. Lay it out with the longest side horizontal to you, then fold it in half and iron the crease so that it stays put. The folded side will make up one of the stocking sides.

Step 3 – Mark it out
With some white chalk make a mark 45cm from the left edge and 22cm from the folded edge. From this point use a ruler to draw a straight line to the left edge.

Step 4 – Boot making
Next you need to sketch the boot end of the stocking. Imagine a boot shape, but with the toe pointing diagonally up to the right of the first chalk mark you made. Start with a gentle rounded curve for the toe, then form a straight line for the sole and a sharp up for the heel where your chalk line meets the folded edge.

Step 5 – Cut and sew
Holding both sides of the felt tightly together, cut the boot shape out with scissors. Taking your red thread, sew the felt together around the boot and up the unfolded side with a seam of about 1cm. Remember not to sew the opening! Turn the stocking inside out so that the seams don't show – the fluffiest side of the felt should now be showing.

Step 6 – Fur it up
Next, cut out your white furry fabric so that you have a piece 8cm deep and 45cm long. Hand-sew (or glue) this around the top edge of the opening to make a nice fluffy trim.

Step 7 – Finishing touches
Your Christmas stocking is ready to hang! If you and the kids are feeling adventurous, feel free to customise it by gluing on buttons or adding sequins spelling out their name. Finally sew on a ribbon or felt loop so that it can be hung up over the mantelpiece ready to be filled with goodies.
