At some point or another, even the biggest fashionistas amongst us have committed fashion faux pas. Whether it was a haircut gone-wrong, or a disastrous outfit that seemed like a good idea, often looking back through old photos can be a minefield of poor fashion choices.Throughout the decades, trends come and go, but this list of the top ten worst fashion trends will hopefully stay in the deep, dark depths of the fashion world for a long time to come.

1 Perms

Described as a cross between a lion’s mane and a poodle, the 80s perm is a hairstyle that will hopefully stay filed in fashion’s Room 101. Like that annoying uncle at a family party, the perm features in many a ruined family photo from decades gone by. If you were one of the unlucky ones to have once had a perm, don’t despair! They were once sported by usually-on-trend celebrities, including Maria Carey and Sarah Jessica Parker.

2 Shoulder pads

Another fashion faux pas to thank the 80s for, shoulder pads seem to appear in every single pop video from the 80s. Giving women everywhere a bizarre body shape, we’re not sure why they were ever really popular. The popular TV show Dynasty is responsible for this one. Like a bad smell, shoulder pads just won’t seem to go away, with celebrities such as Rihanna and Beyonce attempting to bring them back into fashion.

3 Shell suits

Shell suits were a fashion staple in the 90s, they were definitely one of the worst fashion trends from the decade. Made from polyester, the matching trouser-jacket combinations were mostly brightly coloured and worn by the young and trendy. However, not surprisingly they quickly fell out of favour. With endorsements from Ali G, it is no surprise they have (hopefully) been banished from ever becoming trendy again.

4 Crocs

Made popular in the late 2000s, crocs were originally designed for people to wear on boats, as they dried quickly and were not slippery when wet. Unfortunately, crocs found their way into fashion and they were sported by celebrities around the globe. These Lego look-a-like shoes were even worn by former president George W Bush. If we were president, we’d have had them banned.

5 Double denim

Double denim just won’t go away. With fashion icons such as Rihanna rocking the double-denim look, it has experienced a major resurgence in recent years. With all kinds of trendy fashionistas championing double denim, it appears as though it’s here to stay. Unfortunately, we’re just not convinced. Frankly it brings back memories of Jimmy Corkhill from Brookside, and that is never a good thing.

6 Flares

Another fashion trend best consigned to earlier decades, Flares have recently attempted to make resurgence. Thankfully the trend never caught on and it seems they will be stuck in the 60s and 70s forever.

7 Platforms

Platforms made a comeback in the 90s thanks to ‘girl power’ from the Spice Girls. With platform boots and trainers being the most popular form of footwear for any 90s fashion victim, we wouldn’t be surprised if A&E departments across the world saw a sharp increase in ankle injuries during the Spice Girl’s reign as pop royalty. Thankfully, the Spice Girls eventually grew up and began to champion more sensible footwear.

8 Mullets

Once again we can thank the 80s for another style trend we’d like to see banished. Short at the front and long at the back, the mullet was favoured by many during the 80s and even during the early 90s. Thankfully mullets were only in fashion for men, despite women’s best efforts to make it popular. Celebrities that once sported mullets include George Clooney, David Bowie and Patrick Swayze.

9 Crop tops

Crop tops’ recent resurgence has earned them a place on our top ten worst fashion trends. Crop tops first came into fashion when Madonna was seen gyrating in a mesh crop top in her Lucky Star video. The trend continued into the 90s with celebrities such as Shania Twain sporting crop tops in her music videos. An even weirder trend was when pregnant stars wore crop tops in order to show off their baby bumps on stage. In recent years, however they’ve been sported by those with a less-than-perfect physique, meaning you can’t visit your local shops without seeing jelly-bellies left right and centre. Unless you’ve got abs of steel, it’s probably best to steer clear of having your belly on show.

10 Onesies

Traditionally worn by babies, onesies became popular after a number of celebrities were spotted wearing adult size versions of the all-in-one pyjama suits whilst out and about. Comfy, and warm we can see why they became popular loungewear. However, it is definitely a fashion trend that should stick to hangover days on the sofa, and not out of the house!
