Step away from the toaster! It’s time to stop feeling guilty for buying white bread – there are plenty of uses for a slice of bread that don’t involve eating it…

  1. Broken a glass? After you’ve picked up the bigger pieces, use a piece of bread to pick up the tiny pieces left behind – be careful not to cut yourself!
  2. Use to remove dirty marks and fingerprints from walls and painted surfaces…
  3. … or to gently rub away marks on suede shoes or clothing.
  4. Put a slice in your mouth when chopping onions to help stop your eyes from watering.
  5. Spilt some cooking oil? Bread is perfect for soaking up greasy spills.
  6. It also absorbs kitchen odours – put a slice of bread on top of veg such as cabbage or broccoli when cooking to reduce the smell.
  7. Place in the drip-pan when grilling meat to absorb fat and reduce smoke.
  8. Add a slice to your biscuit tin to keep your cookies crunchy…
  9. .. and to your sugar jar to soften-up hardened lumps.
  10. Rescue burnt rice by placing a slice on top while it’s still warm and replacing the lid. Leave for a few minutes to get rid of the scorched taste.

Finally, if you’re determined to eat your bread, remember there are plenty of tasty ways to use up bread that’s past its best – stale bread is prefect for making breadcrumbs, croutons, bread and butter pudding and stuffing.
