Caramel-coated popcorn is a treat that everyone loves. Budget-friendly and easy to make, this snack takes just five minutes to prepare and fifteen minutes to cook.

It’s perfect for the whole family to enjoy whilst watching films and you could even package some popcorn up in a simple container with a bow as a last-minute gift!

Ingredients:

  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 200g popcorn maize
  • 125g butter
  • 150g caster sugar
  • 2 tbsp clear honey

Method:

  1. Heat the oil in a large pan and add the popcorn. Cover and cook for 3-4 minutes on a medium heat, shaking the pan occasionally until the popping stops. Tip the popcorn into a large bowl. The kernels will plump up quite a bit so cook the popcorn in two separate batches if necessary.
  2. Quickly wipe the inside of your pan with kitchen paper to get rid of any excess oil, then add the butter, sugar and honey. Cook gently, stirring until the sugar dissolves. Bring the mixture to the boil and let it bubble, without stirring, for 4-5 minutes, until it turns caramel-coloured.
  3. Remove from the heat and add the popped corn to the pan containing your caramel mixture, stirring until most of the popcorn is coated. Tip out onto two non-stick baking trays and leave to set and harden.
  4. Your popcorn should now be one big sticky ball. Break it up into smaller clusters and put these in a bowl to serve. You could even serve each cluster from simple handmade cones made from leftover wrapping paper.

Tip: If you’re planning to make the popcorn more than a few hours ahead, store it in an airtight box so it stays crunchy.
