Serves 6-8

Combine the sweetness of apple sauce with the sharp taste of cranberries and you’ll have cran-apple sauce – the perfect accompaniment to your Christmas turkey!

The bright colour livens up your Christmas dinner table, kids love the unique taste and it’s got health benefits too – rich in vitamin C and fibre!

Ingredients:

  • 500g cranberries
  • 3 bramley apples, peeled, cored and sliced into small chunks
  • 150g golden caster sugar
  • 1 cinnamon stick

Method:

1. Pour your cranberries into a large bowl of cold water, swirl them around and scoop them out with your fingers, feeling for any mushy berries, as you scoop. Discard any mushy, soft berries. Boil about 2 inches of water in a pan and add the cranberries. Let them cook for about 10 minutes, stirring once or twice – you’ll hear the berries popping, as they cook.

2. Once most of the cranberries have popped, add the apples and cinnamon stick and simmer on a medium heat until the apples feel soft with a fork all the way through (after about 12 minutes).

3. Add your sugar to taste. Boil down until the mixture thickens slightly, then take off the heat and leave to cool. Remove the cinnamon stick.

4. Serve the sauce warm or wait for it to cool. Alternatively transfer it to a sterilised jar to enjoy at a later date or give to loved ones as a lovely home-made Christmas gift.
