When you’ve found the perfect gifts for your family and friends, they deserve special treatment, right? Handmade, modern, and easy, these Christmas gifts tags are the perfect finishing touch to show everyone how much you care.

They’re inexpensive to make and with a little time and effort you can make tags that will stand out and make your presents look even better than they are!

Step 1 – Christmas cards

The front covers of Christmas greetings cards will form the basis of your gift tags. Use cards you were given last year (provided there’s no writing on the inside covers) or buy a cheap pack of ten. Contemporary cards work well, with simple snowflake and snowmen designs on plain backgrounds. Snip the cards down the fold so you’re left with the cover.

Step 2 – Cut out your tags

Take a card cover and cut out several shapes from it. Be as adventurous as you like. You should be able to cut out three or four from a 6×4 card. Remember to keep part of the pattern/design visible on each shape you cut out as we’ve done with the snowflakes on the image above. Alternatively, you could cut out the shapes using pinking shears to give a zig-zag edge.

Step 3 – The border

To create a nice white border around each shape, paint around the edges with white correction fluid that you’ll find in most stationers. You could even use correction tape and your border will be the same width all the way around.

Step 4 – Punch a hole

Use a standard hole punch to create a hole near the edge of your gift tags so you can loop your thread. If you’ve not got a hole punch, just attach your thread to the back using sticky tape or use a sewing needle to thread it through the card.

Step 5 – Your thread

You probably always throw these away, but clothes tags make an amazing thread for gift tags. The string they’re attached to is chunkier and more hardwearing than most and there’s often a stylish toggle to add pizzazz. Just remember to remove the actual tag! Don’t worry if you’ve not got any – you can use any colour string, ribbon or thread.

Step 5 – Be soppy, then attach

Now it’s time to write your verse, cram as many kisses on the back of your tag as you can and fix it to your gift. If you’re tying a ribbon to your gift, simply loop it through your thread. If you’re using a sticky bow, stick your thread underneath that. Failing that, sticky tape always does the trick.

Bonus tip – tape the edge of each tag to your gifts face down – then everyone can see your handiwork and only the recipient can read the message!

Remember to save the Christmas cards you get this year so you can make your own tags for next year!
